Ghoghanj Children’s Center

Ghoghanj Children’s Center

Description

Created in 2003, the Ghoghanj Children’s Center cares for and mentors children of families severely economically challenged in Yerevan. Their goal is to provide the proper support and guidance children need to excel in school and become self-confident and respectful young adults.
The staff is mostly comprised of professional teachers who volunteer their time and skills to help Armenia’s children.

The center provides homework assistance, English classes and art programs for more than 70 students of hardworking single-parent households or socially dysfunctional families. “At-risk students,” as these children are commonly known as around the world, gain a tremendous benefit from the guidance the center offers.

Some of the children have social, behavioral or physical disabilities. The Ghoghanj Children’s Center places a great emphasis on the psychological and social development of children. Students are recruited with the help of local schools who identify children who would benefit from the services.

The Paros Foundation provides rent free, modern office space to house the Ghoghanj Children’s Center, in addition to modest annual support to sponsor English and theater classes.

Please support the creative and intellectual development of Armenia’s children by helping sponsor this important organization:

Vanadzor Museum of Fine Arts

Vanadzor Museum of Fine Arts

Description

In 1974, the Vanadzor Museum of Fine Arts was founded as a branch of the National Gallery of Armenia. In 1979, it was reorganized and received the status of an independent Museum of Fine Arts with its own collection. Soon thereafter, the Museum became one of the most prominent cultural centers in the Lori region.

The Museum houses more than 1,700 works of art including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and decorative arts. The first floor exhibit hall is dedicated to sculpture and drawing. Works by artists of Lori Region are on display in a separate hall. Special exhibitions are regularly held.

The Museum’s research team works in the fields of history, criticism and theory of art, as well as delivers public lectures, and conducts collaborative meetings and seminars. Students from schools, colleges and universities have the opportunity to hold and attend classes in the Museum.

Though the Museum receives modest state support, the Museum relies on support from private individuals and foundations to grow its impact as an important destination in the Lori Region. The Paros Foundation supports the Museum with aggressive marketing efforts designed to raise awareness of the Museum and its significant collection of art in an attempt to help redevelop and reinvigorate the historical art colony in the Lori Region.

In 2009, the Paros Foundation created a market for art work and crafts, and a source of revenue for local artists and the Museum through the construction of a Museum Gift Shop at the Vanadzor Museum. All proceeds from this shop benefit the artists and the Museum itself, and was built in memory of Angela and Karekin Barsoumian (Allepo, Los Angeles).

Vanadzor Art School No. 3

Vanadzor Art School No. 3

Description

The Tigran Chukhajyan Art School (formerly Vanadzor Music School #3) was established in 1969 through the efforts of Eduard Kzartmian. Originally it was located on the ground floor of a residential building and had a total of seven classrooms. The school eventually became one of the best in the Lori Region of Armenia and began attracting more and more students every year. In 1984 the school was relocated to a larger building and underwent major reconstruction to accommodate 500 students. It was transformed into an exemplary academic facility with large classrooms and auditoriums.

The 1988 Shirak Earthquake seriously damaged the school and students had to relocate to a temporary location. The make-shift building did not have proper heating or lighting. Leaks from the roof resulted in further deterioration of the building. The musical instruments were damaged because of water the lack of proper storage facilities. Only 26 pianos, one violin and two cellos were able to be used at the Vanadzor Musical School. However, despite all these difficulties students continued their classes and participated in regional music competitions receiving awards.

In September of 2001 Armenia Fund Inc. adopted the Vanadzor School project through a joint financing agreement with the Arshak II Opera Committee. Both the Arshak II Opera Committee and Armenia Fund Inc. acknowledged the significance of this joint mission to fund the reconstruction and the refurnishing of the school. That year the Arshak II Opera Committee held a sold-out Gala and allocated proceeds to the reconstruction of the School. The Gala proceeds of approximately $250,000 were partially used in the joint efforts for the reconstruction of the School and the rest for the future maintenance. The funds were also used to purchase critically needed musical instruments, student aid, and teacher compensation.

The Paros Foundation regularly inspects the physical facility and recommends needed repairs. Several of the improvements have been completed by sponsorship from a San Francisco Committee. Past maintenance issues have been completed under The Paros Foundation’s guidance including replacement of the central boiler, repair of the stage walls, repairs to the basement to contend with moisture issues, work to the outside of the building, painting of all the window frames, and repair of student desks. With the help of our donors the school has obtained a high quality copy machine, as well as a baby grand piano, two violins, a guitar, flutes and several traditional Armenian instruments including kanoons, kamanches and duduks. Furthermore, The Paros Foundation has helped find funding for scholarships that have been awarded to students on merit and financial need.

The Paros Foundation works to promote the Tigran Chukhajyan Art school as it is an exemplary example of Armenia’s talent and potential in the Lori Region. The Foundation’s goal is to help the School find additional sponsors to aid with student expenses related to additional scholarships, individual travel to and participation in international competitions and their continuing education.
