Orphaned Children’s Day Excursion 23

Orphaned Children’s Day Excursion 23

Read Updates

Description

More than 1,200 children live in Armenia’s 15 orphanages. These facilities provide for the children’s basic needs, but their limited budgets do not allow these children to participate in visits to popular historical sites, an amusement park or concert, or attend a cultural event.

Armenia’s orphan children should have the opportunity to experience popular cultural events, exhibits, and excursions in Armenia, or simply have a fun afternoon or activity that they normally would not be able to experience. Many different activities and excursions can be organized for these children. The extent of the activity or trip is directly related to the sponsorship amount. For sponsorships amounts between $250 -$750 approximately 20 children and an appropriate number of chaperons will be able participate in a memorable activity. Please consider supporting multiple excursions for these children.

The Paros Foundation staff and volunteers will organize and oversee the excursion/activity. Opportunities to sponsor excursions for orphanages serving both disabled and non-disabled children exist. Whenever possible, our staff will work with the destination for the excursion to secure group pricing and/or discounts.

The Need

Armenia’s orphanages generally are able to provide for their children’s basic care, but limited funding does not allow these children to visit museums, historical sites and popular cultural events. Allowing a child a few hours of recreation and/or entertainment as a regular child greatly enhances his/her outlook on life and reduces the emotional complexes of being an orphan.

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact of this project will be the immediate employment of a bus driver, money being spent in Armenia’s local economy and most important the education and social benefits for 20 orphan children.

Long Term Impact

This project has considerable long-term emotion, education and psychological benefits for the children, as they will be able to participate in activities that are above and beyond basic existence in an orphanage.

Sponsors Benefits

Your support of this project will be recognized at the relevant Orphanage, your name listed as a sponsor on The Paros Foundation website and in appropriate press related to this important project. The Paros Foundation stands ready to help you arrange a visit to the care facility when you are in Armenia.

Home Improvements for Hrant A.

Home Improvements for Hrant A.

Read Updates

Description

Hrant and his wife along with their married son and his family all live together in the border village of Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur.  Seven people total live in this home, including three children under the age of six.  The home is in need of a full remodel including the addition of one bedroom to offer the children a space of their own.

The family has a small plot of land around the house. They have a pig and a cow and some bee hives. They also have a small plot of land on the edge of the village that they use to harvest grass for use in their small barn.

Hrant is a retired soldier from the Armenian army and lives on a pension. His son, Karen, works in Berd and also works as a beekeeper for The Paros Foundation’s honey production effort at the local school.

Hrant’s house is in overall poor condition with their greatest need being a new roof and doors and windows. They also do not have proper heating.  This effort would not only solve these critical housing needs, but also provide this large family with a completely renovated and reconfigured home for them.

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is an important border village with a population of approximately 1,100 residents in the Berd area of Armenia’s Tavush Region. This community remains under constant risk of sniper fire and renewed armed conflict. NKA was the single most damaged Armenian village during the Azeri conflict in the 1990’s. The economy of the village and the livelihood of many of its residents have suffered due to these difficult and dangerous conditions. In particular, 70% of their fertile land is unusable because of frequent sniper attacks. Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is a beneficiary village of the Paros Foundation’s Prosperity on the Border Initiative. With major financial support of Jean-Marie Atamian and his family over the last 10 years, much of the village’s infrastructure has been completely rebuilt and improved including, but not limited to, its large secondary school, expanded kindergarten, medical center, emergency services building and water distribution system. In addition, several families have benefited from agribusiness and animal husbandry projects. Having funded the rebuilding of NKA’s infrastructure, the Atamian family is now focusing its attention on the reconstruction of severely damaged houses to provide decent and safe homes for deserving families in the village.

The Need

Hrant A.’s home is in poor condition.  Due to lack of economic opportunities in this border community, Hrant and his family cannot afford to renovate their home.  A leaky roof, poor windows and lack of proper heating create unsafe and uncomfortable conditions for his large family.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, a local construction crew will be employed to renovate this home and earn a fair market wage.  Reconstruction materials will be purchased locally also to provide a benefit to the regional economy.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, as homes in these communities are improved, local villagers will take greater pride in their communities. More importantly, Hrant and his family will live in safer and more comfortable conditions.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors of this important project will be listed on The Paros Foundation’s website and in all press related to this project. Visits to these communities can be arranged for sponsors visiting Armenia.

School Improvements for Students in Paruyr Sevak

School Improvements for Students in Paruyr Sevak

Read Updates

Description

The village of Paruyr Sevak was founded in 1978 and named after the famous poet Paruyr Sevak.  The village is located in the Ararat Region and is near the border of Nakhchivan and occasionally receives cross border sniper fire.  Almost 600 people live in the village of Paruyr Sevak. There is no gas infrastructure in the area, so families burn wood or use electricity to heat their homes and public buildings.  Improvements were recently made to the drinking water infrastructure for homes in Paruyr Sevak.  Irrigation water continues to be a problem for the village and dramatically effects their ability to farm.

The village’s school, is in overall poor condition.  The campus was originally designed in the 80s to encompass three large buildings, but only one of them was actually completed.  The 80+ students that attend this school, do so in substandard conditions.  The school does not have heating so it is cold in the winter.  Students do not have any appropriate inside or outside space for gym class, or physical activities.  There is a shortage of space within the existing building for extra curricular activities such as dance classes, choir practices and community gatherings.

Improvements to the school will be made in phases as funding permits with the most important first step being the installation of a heating system into the school.  This will cost approximately $40,000.  In addition, an outside sports court will be built allowing children an appropriate space to play basketball, soccer and volleyball.  This will cost approximately $9,000.  Finally, one large multipurpose room will be renovated with bathrooms and locker rooms to allow children to have dance class and other enrichment activities for the school.  This will cost approximately $36,000.

Work will commence as funding is raised for this project.

The Need

The school in the village of Paruyr Sevak does not have a functioning heating system for the cold winter months.  In addition, the school overall is in poor condition and does not have appropriate space for assemblies, dance classes and/or other gatherings including gym class.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, as work begins on the school, several temporary employment positions will be created and a modest economic benefit will be realized as all materials and will be purchased locally.

Long Term Impact

In the long run, children and staff will dramatically benefit from these improvements to the school including proper heating and appropriate physical activity space, both which will keep them healthier and contribute to an overall more positive environment at the school and in the village.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors of this important project will be listed on The Paros Foundation’s website and in all press related to this project. Visits to Paruyr Sevak can be arranged for sponsors visiting Armenia.

Wrestling Programs in Tavush

Wrestling Programs in Tavush

Read Updates

Description

The ARM HOF (Armenian Hall of Fame) Organization has partnered with The Paros Foundation to implement several wrestling programs at schools in Armenia’s Tavush Region.

Wrestling programs will include installing proper wrestling mats along with other training equipment, providing coaching salary for one year, and organizing wrestling tournaments among participating schools.

During this initial phase, we hope to raise the necessary funds to launch wrestling programs at 10 schools.  To successfully launch a wrestling team at a school, the school needs some minimum equipment including mats, a climbing rope, free weights, pull up bar, practice mannequins and uniforms. This equipment can cost up to $5,000 depending on whether or not the school already has any of these items. In addition, salaries of coaching staffs can cost up to a maximum of $1,500 per year. In addition to these per school costs, to successfully sponsor a quarterly tournament, transportation for all the schools must be arranged, along with other expenses. This can cost up to a total of $500 per tournament.

Students at school throughout Armenia take a keen interest in physical fitness and wrestling in particular, but due to a lack of funding for both equipment and coaches students often cannot participate. This effort aims at building interest and the necessary support to help students accelerate in this sport an early age, just preparing them for success at future Olympic games and another international Competitions!

The Need

To promote friendly competition between neighboring schools, fitness, and the sport of wrestling, Schools must be equipped with proper equipment and coaching staff salaries. Schools in the isolated Tavush Region do not have the resources to promote wrestling at their schools and competition amongst their schools.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, wrestling materials and equipment will be purchased and installed at schools. Coaches will also be identified at each school. Students will be registered who wish to participate on these teams.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, from the competitions between neighboring schools will lead to a sense of pride in one school, better overall fitness, and add an interesting dimension to village Life. As these programs grow top athletes will be recognized across the country.

Description

The village of Nerkin Tsaghkavan is located in Armenia’s Tavush Region on the road to Noyemberyan and is home to more than 500 people.  Both the village of Nerkin Tsaghkavan and the neighboring village of Kirants do not have a kindergarten for its children.  The village has allocated a building centrally located in the village to house a future kindergarten.  In addition, the consolidated community has funding available for the kindergarten’s operational expenses once it is built.  The Paros team has visited this kindergarten and designed construction to include its future expansion to house two groups of up to 60 children.  Initial construction will allow for the kindergarten to begin operation with one group (30 children).  Construction will include a new roof, windows, heating and a playroom, sleep room, kitchen/dining hall, bathroom and small office.

In addition, the project will include the furnishing of the kindergarten with all furniture necessary to launch operations including tables, chairs, beds, lockers, kitchen cabinets, desks, and appliances.

Ponics Farming on the Border

Ponics Farming on the Border

Read Updates

Description

Facing the challenges of limited water, limited access to land and the challenges of weather, an aquaponic growing system for food is a perfect solution for border communities.  An Aquaponics has clear benefits over soil-based gardening including lessened, adverse environmental impacts, reduced consumption of resources, faster plant growth, and higher yields.  The Paros Foundation working through its Aygepar Incubator, has won a $53,000 grant from the Austrian Development Agency to install a 1,760 sq. ft. greenhouse along with a control building to house an aquaponic growing system in the village of Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur.  Our contribution towards this important project is an additional $15,000.  The system will be housed in a 160 square meter controlled environment greenhouse.  This fully recirculating system will be used as both a training center and as a plant production business. The system will introduce rabbit waste into a small waste processing station before being pumped into a fully aqueous media environment which converts the waste to usable nitrates.  The resulting nitrate fertilizer will be circulated through the bioreactor, into Deep Water Culture beds and Nutrient Film Technique gutters prior to their return to a waste processing station.     Once completed, this system will serve as a model for the entire region.  Its training component will serve to instruct the next generation on how to benefit from and properly care for an aquaponics farming system.

Aquaponic systems are sustainable and will greatly benefit the community of Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur.

The Need

Because of a shortage of land and lack of water in the community of Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur, it is difficult to farm.  The introduction of an aquaponic system and training will greatly benefit this community.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, the preparation and construction of the aquaponic system in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur will bring a mild economic benefit to the community as local labor and materials will be used whenever possible.

Long Term Impact

In the longer term, the community will benefit economically as any proceeds from the sales of the aquaponic farm will be reinvested directly in the community.  In addition, the villagers will benefit from the training they receive in this new cutting edge technology.

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is an important border village with a population of more than 1,100 residents in the Berd area of Armenia’s Tavush Region. With major financial support of Jean-Marie Atamian and his family over the last ten years, much of the village’s infrastructure has been completely rebuilt and improved including, but not limited to, its large secondary school, expanded kindergarten, medical center, emergency services building and water distribution system. In addition, several families have benefited from agribusiness and animal husbandry projects. Having funded the rebuilding of NKA’s infrastructure, the Atamian family is now focusing its attention on the reconstruction of severely damaged houses to provide decent and safe homes for deserving families in the village. Since 2012, a variety of work (ranging from $2,500 to $30,000) has taken place on more than 20 homes in the village.

Ashot A. lives with his wife, his two sons and one of his son’s families.   A total of eight people live together.

One of Ashot’s sons works for the road police, and the other works in construction and has even worked in the past as part of the Paros work crew.  They have land which they plant a garden, they have one pig and some chickens.   Ashot’s newest grandchild was born with some physical defects.  He is missing fingers on his hand and his foot is malformed.  He is being treated with special shoes to help form his foot in Yerevan. The family is concerned with the baby’ treatment and has little funding available to make needed improvements to their home.

Prior to the birth of the newest grandchild, Ashot had begun to do some work on their home including making roof repairs and had hopes of building the family a bathroom and new kitchen.  However, the baby’s medical problems have consumed any available funds for hospital bills. The work will include a new roof, windows, kitchen, bathroom, heating system and a complete interior remodel. This will allow the family to leave in clean, sanitary and comfortable conditions.

Description

Nor Luyce works with young girls, ages 14-17, from two local orphanages and/or from poverty stricken families from Gyumri, Armenia. Under the direction of their Executive Director, Shoghik Mikayelyan, the program provides their mentees with positive roles models and emotional support. The reduction of isolation is provided by mentors and by field trips, which expose the children to various work and educational settings. In addition, Nor Luyce’s program emphasizes the development of educational and career plans. They are now at the stage of either beginning or continuing to help implement each older child’s plan for higher education. Each child has also either completed or is in the process of completing a career plan, which includes the most appropriate type and place of higher education.

Nor Luyce is trying to provide Gohar M., with a scholarship that would reduce her out of pocket cost towards her education. Gohar was born on March 3, 2002 in Gyumri. She has a brother and a father. Her father has health issues and is bedridden. Gohar lost her mom to cancer when she was only 14 years old. Her brother is working and taking care of the family. Their monthly income is only 31000 AMD which is equivalent to about $80 USD.

Gohar is studying in the department of Tourism at Shirak State University. Gohar joined Nor Luyce in 2019. She is very smart, broad-minded, hardworking, responsible for her actions and words, and respectful towards everyone. She is only 18 years old but she is very mature compared to her peers. Together with her mentor Gohar worked to reach the ideal person that she desired to be.

Currently, Gohar needs our support in getting her degree because her family is socially vulnerable. The requested scholarship funds will help Gohar continue her studies. She needs our support to get a college degree to be able to have a better future.

The Need

Children living in orphanages and/or within poverty stricken families are often isolated and may lack the knowledge, adult support and financial ability necessary to make appropriate life choices. As a consequence, many of these children are deprived from the opportunity to pursue their education. The frustration of these deficits in addition to the expectation that they will not be able to afford additional education may even lead to a lack of motivation to seek the knowledge and support needed. By being given the opportunity to pursue educational goals, they will be able to secure job opportunities, a good future and a successful life.

Short Term Impact
Long Term Impact

The long-term goal is that four girls, being given the opportunity to continue pursuing their educational goals at the university level will have a reasonable chance to become self-sufficient member of Armenian society and have a successful lives.

Sponsors Benefits

Sponsors will be recognized on both the Nor Luyce and Paros Foundation websites. Donors will be given regular progress reports on the girls’ progress during their university studies.

Border Home Renovation-Rafik P.

Description

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is an important border village with a population of more than 1,100 residents in the Berd area of Armenia’s Tavush Region.

Rafik P.  is 44 and his wife is 32.  They have two sons.  Roman and Mark, 8 and 5 years old.  Rafik works occasionally at a store doing basic labor on an occasional basis when they need him.   Anna studied management but does not because she is caring for her children.  The family lives on Rafik’s income plus, they have one cow, one calf and  some chickens.  They also care for Anna’s father’s beehives and they split the honey with him.  Rafik’s home is in very poor condition and needs to be completely renovated.  The family is trying their best to make ends meet but their house is in very poor condition and they have little hope of being able to renovate it themselves.  The work will include a new roof, windows, kitchen, bathroom, heating system and a complete interior remodel. This will allow the family to leave in clean, sanitary and comfortable conditions.
