Talia’s Effort for Debi Arach Food Program

Talia’s Effort for Debi Arach Food Program

Description

This July Talia went to Armenia for 3 weeks with The Paros Foundation. She was part of various service projects, including helping renovate village school classrooms and distributing humanitarian and educational supplies in rural communities.

As part of the SERVICE Armenia 2026 trip, Talia will be raising funds for a Paros project that she is passionate about. Talia has chosen to support the Debi Arach Children’s Center in Gyumri for their food program. The Center serves children from vulnerable families, providing a safe and supportive environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive.

A message from Talia:

This summer, I had the unique opportunity to participate in SERVICE Armenia. During our time in Gyumri, we visited the Debi Arach Children’s Center, an experience that left a lasting impression on me.  While at the center, we distributed shoes and backpacks filled with school supplies to the children. I also spent time with the students during Armenian studies, worked alongside them, and joined them during structured play. Being able to interact with the children and experience the welcoming and supportive environment created for them made my visit especially meaningful.  One moment that particularly stood out to me was lunchtime. I watched as the women at the center prepared homemade meals for the children with such care. It reminded me that Debi Arach provides more than educational opportunities and activities. It also helps meet the children’s everyday needs and creates a place where they feel cared for and supported.  After experiencing Debi Arach firsthand, I knew I wanted my fundraising efforts to support their work in a meaningful and practical way. I am committed to raising funds to help purchase fresh, healthy ingredients for meals prepared for the children throughout the year.  Supporting a place I have personally visited and children I had the privilege of spending time with makes this project especially meaningful to me. I hope the funds I raise will help Debi Arach continue providing nutritious, homemade meals and the caring environment I was fortunate enough to experience.

Description

Since 2012, The Paros Foundation has worked to improve the quality of life in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur (NKA), an important border village of approximately 1,100 residents in Armenia’s Tavush Region. Through our Prosperity on the Border initiative, the Foundation has helped rebuild or improve the village’s school, kindergarten, medical center, emergency services building, municipal building and water distribution system. With the support of Jean-Marie Atamian, his family and friends, partial or complete renovations have also been completed on nearly 10% of the village’s homes. This continued investment helped make NKA one of the communities selected by The Paros Foundation to welcome families displaced from Artsakh.

Alik lives in NKA with his family of seven, which includes four adults and three children. Their home requires several essential interior repairs. This $13,000 project will replace damaged subflooring and the electrical system, install new laminate flooring and tile and repair and repaint the walls and ceilings.

Sponsorship of this project will provide the materials, skilled labor and technical support needed to complete the family’s home renovations. By creating safe and comfortable living conditions, this project will help the family build a more secure future while supporting the continued strength and stability of this important border village.

Visible cracks across bedroom walls, needing significant repairs

The Need

The family’s home requires repairs to its flooring, walls, ceilings and electrical system. Completing these improvements will address the home’s most pressing interior needs and provide safer and more suitable living conditions for all seven family members.

Short Term Impact

Once the renovations are completed, the family will have new flooring, repaired and freshly painted living spaces and an updated electrical system. The construction work will also create short-term employment for local tradespeople and skilled workers, keeping a portion of the project’s investment within the area.

Long Term Impact

These improvements will help prevent further deterioration and provide Alik’s family with a safer, more comfortable and functional home for years to come. Helping families remain in NKA also supports the continued strength and vitality of this important border village.

Sponsors Benefits

Sponsors will be recognized on The Paros Foundation’s website and in press and project-related communications. Project updates will be shared as the renovation progresses, and visits to the family and village can be arranged for sponsors traveling to Armenia.

Suren is a police officer who lives in NKA with his wife and four children. Their home was renovated in 2020, but the living room floor has since become worn and needs to be replaced. During the original renovation, the family could not afford the ongoing monthly cost of gas heating, so portable electric heaters were provided to help warm the space. Their financial situation has since improved, allowing them to manage the cost of gas heating. This $4,600 project will replace the living room flooring and install a gas heating system throughout the home.

Sponsorship of this project will provide the materials, skilled labor and technical support needed to complete the family’s home renovations. Growing Gyumri: Ani’s Fundraising for the Debi Arach Food Program

Growing Gyumri: Ani’s Fundraising for the Debi Arach Food Program

Description

As part of the SERVICE Armenia 2026 trip, participants are raising funds for a Paros project they are passionate about. Ani has chosen to support the Debi Arach Children’s Center in Gyumri. The Center serves children from vulnerable families, providing a safe and supportive environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive.

Through this effort, Ani will raise funds that will directly support the children’s needs and overall well-being. Your support will make a meaningful difference in their lives and help create a brighter future.

A message from Ani:

Gyumri is a special place, one that uniquely embodies everything we Armenians pride ourselves on: history, family, and resilience. And though the people of Gyumri may be known for their lighthearted sense of humor, like most Armenians, what they’ve been through is anything but light.

We all know about the Spitak earthquake of 1988. What many of us don’t know is that many survivors of that disaster are still without basic human rights—adequate food or shelter. Living out of shipping containers that once held humanitarian aid and the ruins of crumbling Soviet-era buildings that once were, these Gyumri families have exhibited the resilience hallmark of Armenians everywhere.

But Armenians are more than just our resilience. We are a family. We take care of each other. Which is why when other Paros service volunteers and I distributed humanitarian aid to our struggling compatriots in Gyumri, we would get stopped in our tracks and invited for coffee afterward.

This is how we grow—by taking care of each other. And now, it’s time to grow Gyumri. Paros Foundation’s Debi Arach Children’s Center in Gyumri provides more than 180 children with academic, psychological, vocational, social, and humanitarian support—all free of charge. Beyond that, Debi Arach provides opportunity. And right now, Debi Arach is providing us with one: it’s time to take care of our family.

By supporting this project, you will be directly supporting Debi Arach’s food program. Many of Gyumri’s bright young minds need proper sustenance. Debi Arach provides these kids with nutritious meals throughout the day, often more than they receive at home. My goal is to raise at least $3,000 for this project. This helps Debi Arach Children’s Center’s food garden, home-grown by the children themselves. It also helps the community members working in the kitchen, making the food that keeps these children going.

After all, we’re family, and together we can make it happen!

Fruit Dryer for Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur School

Fruit Dryer for Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur School

Read Updates

Description

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur (NKA) is a border village located in Armenia’s Tavush Region. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 residents, and its main economic activity is agriculture. Economic opportunities in border villages like NKA are extremely limited due to a lack of investment and ongoing safety concerns. Without these opportunities, families are often forced to find work elsewhere or move out of the region entirely.

NKA School currently operates an orchard and greenhouse where fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown. While students eat some of the produce as part of their school lunches, the school is producing more than it can use before it spoils. Currently, the school has two small household dryers, but they do not have enough capacity to process the available harvest.

The Paros Foundation is raising $9,200 to purchase a small commercial fruit dryer, refrigerator, fruit processing containers and the supplies needed to package the dried products. This budget will also cover the labor costs of two seasonal employees. The dryer will be installed in the back room of the school’s greenhouse, which is already equipped with solar panels and a freezer for the produce. This equipment will allow the school to dry fruits, vegetables, and herbs, extend the life of its harvest, reduce food waste, and even package products for potential sale.

Picture4

The Need

NKA School’s orchard and greenhouse produce more fruits, vegetables, and herbs than the school can consume while fresh. As a result, part of the harvest goes bad and is wasted. The school’s two small household dryers cannot process the volume of produce being grown. A commercial dryer will allow the school to preserve more of its harvest and prepare dried products that can be packaged, sold and used later.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, NKA School will receive a small commercial fruit dryer and the packaging supplies needed to begin preserving its produce. The equipment will increase the school’s drying capacity and help prevent fruits, vegetables, and herbs from going to waste.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the school will be able to make better use of the produce grown in its orchard and greenhouse. Any proceeds from the sale of packaged dried products will go directly back to the school, helping support its programs and ongoing agricultural activities. This project will create a more sustainable use for future harvests while strengthening an existing agricultural program in a border village where economic opportunities are limited.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors will be recognized in relevant press regarding this project and on The Paros Foundation website. Visits to the school can be arranged for sponsors traveling to Armenia.

Nor Ughi Second Grade Classroom Renovation

Nor Ughi Second Grade Classroom Renovation

Read Updates

Description

Nor Ughi Village is located in Armenia’s Ararat Region and is home to the Vedi Alcohol Company.  Almost 2,000 people call Nor Ughi and neighboring Ginevet Village their home. Many in these villages are employed at Vedi Alcohol factory or are engaged in agricultural activities.

170 students attend the village school, including eight displaced students from Artsakh. The students are from both the neighboring villages of Ginevet and Nor Ughi. Over the last two years, the school’s gym was renovated, and a high-quality outdoor soccer field was constructed and most recently the school’s science laboratory, teacher’s lounge and first grade classroom was renovated through the continued leadership of Mr. and Mrs. John & June Mangassarian from Rhode Island and they want to continue positively impacting Nor Ughi.

Next on the list of priorities is the renovation of a large classroom that serves the school’s second grade class.   The scope of work will include the complete renovation of the room’s flooring, walls, electrical and lighting.

The Need

Currently, the Nor Ughi School’s classrooms are in poor condition.  The school leadership hopes its second grade classroom will be renovated to allow the second graders to learn in a safe, clean and inviting surroundings.  It is important to note that currently the Nor Ughi School has not been identified by the Armenian Government to be included in its immediate plan for school renovations.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, second grade students at the Nor Ughi School will receive a newly renovated classroom to more effectively study and begin their education.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the benefit of student’s learning in a clean, safe and comfortable environment directly impacts their level of achievement. This renovation will positively impact hundreds of children over its useful life.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors of this important project will be listed on The Paros Foundation’s website and in all press related to this project. Visits to these communities can be arranged for sponsors visiting Armenia.

Description

Anna Z. and her husband Andranik, a contract soldier, reside in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur with their four sons, Vazgen, Vahan, Vigen, and Vahag, and Andranik’s mother, Siranush. Their home, originally provided by the Norwegian Refugee Council following the conflict of the 1990s, has suffered from persistent foundation issues over the past three decades and is now in urgent need of a full rehabilitation. A budget of $24,000 has been established to address the structural and foundation issues, restoring safe and stable living conditions for the entire family.

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is an important border village with a population of approximately 1,100 residents in the Berd area of Armenia’s Tavush Region. This community remained under constant risk of sniper fire for much of the last 30 years. NKA was the single most damaged Armenian village during the Azeri conflict in the 1990s. Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is a beneficiary village of the Paros Foundation’s Prosperity on the Border Initiative. With the major financial support of Jean-Marie Atamian and his family over the last 13 years, much of the village’s infrastructure has been completely rebuilt and improved, including its large secondary school, expanded kindergarten, medical center, emergency services building, and water distribution system. Having funded the rebuilding of NKA’s infrastructure, the Atamian family is now focusing its attention on the reconstruction of severely damaged houses to provide decent and safe homes for deserving families in the village.

The Need

Improving conditions for people living in communities along the border with Azerbaijan is essential. Many of these residents, like Andranik, serve as contract soldiers protecting Armenia’s borders. Helping villagers with critical home repairs is vital to sustaining a vibrant and resilient border community. Anna Z.’s family home has deteriorated significantly over thirty years, with serious structural foundation problems that now compromise the safety and wellbeing of all seven family members. A full rehabilitation is urgently needed to restore the home to a safe and livable condition.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, the family will benefit immediately from a structurally sound and stable home, greatly improving their safety and daily living conditions. Local contractors and construction teams will be hired to carry out the foundation repairs and renovation work, creating employment and directly supporting the local economy. Materials will be sourced regionally where possible, providing additional benefit to the surrounding community.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, homes in these communities will be improved beyond their previous condition. Making significant improvements to villagers’ homes strengthens their sense of security and belonging, improving morale and overall wellbeing, which is equally as important as the physical living conditions themselves. For Anna Z.’s family, a fully rehabilitated home will provide a safe and stable environment for generations to come.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors of this project will be recognized on The Paros Foundation’s website and in any press related to this initiative. For sponsors visiting Armenia, a visit to Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur and the opportunity to see the impact of their contribution firsthand can be arranged.
