Adopt A Classroom

Adopt A Classroom

Description

Representatives of The Paros Foundation have visited more than 100 schools throughout Armenia. While some schools have either been renovated thanks to the Armenian government or as a result of the generosity of international donors, many remain in deplorable conditions and have little hope of being renovated in the near future. These conditions affect both the ability for students to learn, as well as the health of students and teachers. How is a student supposed to learn if there are not proper desks, chairs or windows in the classroom?

The Paros Foundation will directly oversee the renovation of a classroom including addressing such elements as windows, doors, flooring, lighting, paint, chalk or white board and desks and chairs. Whenever possible, the school, students and their parents will be incorporated into the classroom remodel project to help build a sense of community and personal investment.

The Need

Many classrooms throughout Armenia’s schools remain in deplorable conditions. Children should not have to try and learn in these conditions. Because of substandard doors and windows, many classrooms become unusable in the winter months because of the cold. In addition, even schools with proper heating are affected negatively with insufficient warmth in the classrooms that have broken doors and windows. While the Armenian Government and others regularly engage in a campaign to remodel schools, they simply cannot meet the huge need.

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact will be the employment of at least two people to renovate the classroom for one month and the benefit to the local economy through the order for needed supplies and classroom furniture.

Long Term Impact

The long-term impact will benefit at least 10 years of students that will be able to take classes using the updated and modern classroom. This will have a huge psychological impact on both the students and teacher. In addition, the school will benefit from energy savings in the winter months.

Sponsors Benefits

Donors will be recognized with a plaque installed in the remodeled classroom and on The Paros Foundation Website.

Description

Hatsik is a village in the Armavir Province of Armenia. This village of 2,558 people currently houses one school with 285 students in attendance. The Hatsik Village School, which was the site for renovations completed by the Paros Foundation’s SERVICE Armenia 2013 and 2014 groups, is in need of a complete gym makeover. The gym at the Hatsik Village School not only serves as the main sporting area for the entire school, but a meeting place for the entire village. The gym is home to several village meetings and events, and sporting functions for all children and adults from the entire village. Thanks to the generosity of past and present donors, The Paros Foundation renovated ten classrooms, three restrooms and the hallways housing the elementary school wing during the SERVICE Armenia 2013 and 2014 trips and plans to renovate more classrooms during the SERVICE Armenia 2015 trip. The regional government has allocated funding to complete the school’s heating system. In addition, the Hatsik Village Municipality is committed to help raise funds within their network of donors to help with the restoration of the school’s kitchen.

Sponsorship of this project will help raise the amount needed in order to complete renovations at the Hatsik School gym including, new doors, windows and window netting, new lighting, repairs to the walls ceiling and paint, and boys and girls locker rooms. Our previous renovations at the Hatsik School are well maintained, thus giving us great motivation to continue our work at this site. The Paros Foundation is committed to completing renovations and dramatically improving the overall condition for the children at this school.

The Need

According to medical research exercise has many physical and mental advantages for school aged children. Although the Hatsik Village School has a gym, it is in no condition to allow students to participate in physical education classes and receive exercise. A complete gym renovation will provide 285 students the opportunity to participate in sports related education and events in a safe and suitable environment. Furthermore, the renovated gym will serve as a meeting space for the entire village of Hatsik.

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact of this project will be to complete a full renovation of the gym at the Hatsik Village School with new doors, windows and window netting, new lighting, repairs to the walls, ceiling and paint, and boys and girls locker rooms. The gym will immediately serve as a sporting area for 285 students, and a community meeting center for the entire village. In addition, local villagers will be hired to complete the construction work, thus providing them with temporary jobs. Furthermore, materials, when possible, will be purchased from the surrounding area.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, the success of this project will provide a proper facility for physical education, sporting events and community events for current and future students and residents in the village of Hatsik. A new gym will further promote good health and exercise for students for years to come.

Sponsors Benefits

Your donation to sponsor this project will be recognized on a plaque in the gym, on the Paros Foundation website and in appropriate press related to this important project. The Paros Foundation will happily arrange a visit to the Hatsik Village School when you are in Armenia.

These are truly the poorest areas of the country and where the most “in need” people are living. Our goal is to deliver 500 soccer balls. We are hopeful that you can help us in some small way reach this goal by providing us with soccer balls or a small monetary donation. Thank you for considering our special request. We are so proud to have the opportunity to make this small difference in our world. Please consider helping us reach our goal.

Description

The Talin Music School is located in the Aragatsotn Region of Armenia. Talin is considered one of the oldest residential areas of the region and has a population of about 5,400 people. The school is housed in space provided by the town. The Talin Music School provides music classes to more than 110 children annually and employs 15 teachers. Among the lessons provided are classes in piano, duduk, kanon, violin, vocal and music theory. The school receives support from the local government for administrative expenses and the students pay a modest monthly fee to attend classes. The support from the local government and the fees paid by students are not enough to allow the school to replace needed musical instruments.

Center for At-Risk Kids

Center for At-Risk Kids 2014/15

Read Updates

Description

The Ghoghanj Children’s Center located in the Kentron of Yerevan was established 10 years ago and provides afterschool and summer school programs for approximately 75 children every month. Children who attend the Center are loosely defined as “at risk.” These children typically come from very poor households, often times with a single head of household, who cannot pay for such assistance. Additionally, these children are not likely to receive proper supervision after school while completing their homework and other tasks. Due to the hard work, dedication and vision of Diana Grigoryan, a PH.D candidate in Psychology, and her staff, the Center has been able to help socially vulnerable children and give them the support and guidance they need to succeed.

The goal of the Ghoghanj Children’s Center is to provide the necessary academic, psychological and social support to ensure that the children attending mature to well adjusted, successful, young adults. The Center provides several core classes within their curriculum and has had add on opportunities as funding has permitted. Core classes include English, Russian, Computer, Design, Painting, Theater and Dance. Add on programs have included College Entrance Exam Tutoring, Side by Side Mentoring and Ecology Club activities. Furthermore, 13 of the Center’s previous students graduated and are now attending college, proving that Ghoghanj’s model works.

In order to further impact more “at-risk” children, the Center has identified a need for this model to be replicated and offered to other communities in Armenia. A second center for “at-risk” children will be established and modeled after the Ghoghanj Children’s Center in another socially vulnerable community in Yerevan. The new center will provide 75-100 students the same core classes (English, Russian, Computer, Design, Painting, Theater and Dance) as the Ghoghanj Children’s Center. The goal of this project is to broaden the services offered to socially vulnerable children and families in other communities and provide them with the proper support and guidance needed to excel in school and become self-confident and respectful young adults.

The Need

Children in a second socially vulnerable community in Yerevan are in need of additional guidance through social, psychological and academic support, but are too far to be able to attend the Ghoghanj Children’s Center located in the Kentron of Yerevan. A second Center is needed in order to provide at-risk students with the opportunity to attend afterschool and summer school programs close to their homes. Furthermore, these children will be able gain additional skills necessary for a successful future.

Short Term Impact

The short-term impact of this project will be to establish a second Center for At-Risk Kids in another socially vulnerable community in Yerevan and will serve 75-100 new students. In addition, the new center will offer core classes including English, Russian, computer, design, painting, theater and dance. Instructors will be immediately employed to help instruct and oversee these courses.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, this project has the potential of impacting the lives of 75-100 at-risk students by helping them gain the guidance and support they need in order to create greater future opportunities, and become successful individuals and good citizens.

Sponsors Benefits

Your donation to sponsor the establishment of a new Center for At-Risk Kids will be recognized with a plaque at the center, on the center’s website and in their printed materials. Z. Khachatryan Art School Kiln (Sisian)

Description

The Sissian Youth Arts School in Armenia was founded in 1962 to provide afterschool art classes for especially talented youth in the region.

In 1968 the school received a State School Status and has been supported by the Sissian city government. Currently 104 youth come to the school after their regular school day to pursue their dream in various forms of art. Ten percent of the students from this School continue on to the prestigious Terlemezyan Art School in Yerevan and Yerevan State University Art department. Many of the graduates have become artists, and several of them return to Sissian to perpetuate the School’s excellence in art education for regional youth.

Upon its founding, the first department in the school was called “Composition Art”. Students in this department skillfully and beautifully penciled their own ideas onto paper. This department eventually expanded to include all forms of drawing and painting. In 1968 the school enhanced its curriculum by adding Art History and Sculpting classes. In 1989 it increased its vision further by adding a department very close to the hearts of the regional people: the Hand Crafts department where students learn carpet weaving, needlepoint, crochet, knitting and so on. Some of the intricacies of the work they produce can rival any professional.

In 2012, two alumni from this School who completed their Art degree in Yerevan’s Terlemezian Art School returned to Sissian and began teaching a course in Ceramics Theory where the students learn the history of ceramics art (in which Armenians have had a very prominent standing and still do) the theory of ceramics, as well as technical details in producing the beautiful ceramics. The students enthusiasm is heightened and stirred by these classes, but alas, they have no means by which to put this knowledge to practical use, because they do not have a ceramics kiln, nor does one exist in the city for rent. The School’s vision is to expand this department to hands on teaching and giving the students the opportunity to put their creativity into making real ceramics that you can touch and watch and use.

The Need

A kiln does not exist either at the School or in the city of Sissian for students enrolled in the ceramics program to use.

Short Term Impact

Immediately students will be able to continue their education in the ceramic arts by having a quality kiln to fire their artwork.

Long Term Impact

As students become more advanced and interested in the ceramic arts, this project could result in significant benefit to the school through increased enrollment, additional teachers employment, and additional revenue both to the students and to the school from ceramic sales. The education in and production of high quality ceramics and the development of this art form will ultimately preserve and help develop Armenia’s rich artistic heritage.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors will be recognized with a plaque installed in the ceramics classroom at the School. In addition, donors will be recognized on all relevant press regarding this project and on the Paros 100 website. Visits to the School will be arranged for sponsors visiting Armenia.

Read Updates

Description

For the last 15 years, the Women for Development NGO has been implementing educational, health care and community development projects in the villages of the Shirak region. Their mission has been to mobilize these communities through increasing community involvement and education. The Women for Development NGO have been successful in motivating villages to voluntarily organize their own community events.

The village of Lanjik, although plagued with unemployment, poverty and seasonal migration, has put its efforts together and arranged an agreement with a dance tutor to organize a children’s dance group. The village of Torosgyugh has also established a children’s dance group in their village. Currently these children have to perform using borrowed and very old traditional Armenian costumes from a dance group in Gyumri.

These villages are in need of additional support, as they continue to foster these cultural opportunities for both children and their families. Through sponsorship of his project, 30 children between both Torosgyugh and Lanjik villages will obtain 30 new dance costumes and dance shoes to use during their concerts. The goal of this project is to motivate and encourage both parents and their children in continuing their efforts of self-sustainment through community development. Its success will help increase the confidence and self-esteem of these children, leading them towards brighter futures. Furthermore, through the concerts they will be giving these children will be promoting their Armenian culture and heritage.

Description

For many of Armenia’s most isolated and poverty stricken regions, sporting equipment is difficult to come by and expensive to buy. By supporting this project you will help thousands of children attending schools in the poverty stricken villages throughout Armenia. Although schools in these villages may have a few sporting goods, often times, the kids are playing with items that are old, unsafe and unusable. Our goal is to purchase and distribute a variety of sporting goods and equipment to village schools (maximum of $1,200 per school) and give these students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, play individual and team sports and exercise. In addition, the completion of this project will help to promote health and fitness.

The variety of sporting goods will include volleyballs, volleyball nets, basketballs, basketball hoops, soccer balls, soccer nets, wrestling mats, jump ropes, hula hoops, assortment of weights, tennis rackets, tennis balls and some gymnastics equipment based on the needs of individual schools.

The School’s multipurpose room, which serves as a recital hall, exhibit space and dance class room, is need of a cosmetic renovation.

The Need

Armenia’s villages and its children suffer from a lack of facilities for children. The promotion of a child’s education and preservation of our rich culture depend on quality educational institutions. The Kanakeravan Fine Arts School can meet these needs with a modest amount of support.

Short Term Impact

125 children will will have a newly renovated multipurpose room to attend their dance classes, and hold recitals and exhibits. The cosmetic reconstruction of this room and the adjoining changing room will employ a contractor and support the local economy through the purchase of necessary building materials.

Long Term Impact

125 children, their families and the village of Karakeravan at large will benefit from a modern, multipurpose room to use while attending the afterschool programs at the Karakeravan Fine Arts School, and during subsequent art exhibits, recitals and small concerts.

Sponsors Benefits

Your donation to remodel the Kanakeravan Art School Multipurpose Room will be recognized with a plaque and your name listed as a sponsor on the Paros Foundation website and in appropriate press related to this important project. The Paros Foundation will happily arrange a visit to the Kanaderavan Art School when you are in Armenia.

Description

Lusine H.Nor Luyce works with young girls, from two local orphanages and/or from poverty stricken families from Gyurmi, Armenia. Under the direction of their Executive Director, Shoghik Mikayelyan, the program provides their mentees with positive role models and emotional support. In addition, Nor Luyce’s program emphasizes the development of educational and career plans. They are now at the stage of either beginning or continuing to help implement each older child’s plan for higher education. Each child has also either completed or is in the process of completing a career plan, which includes the most appropriate type and place of higher education.

Nor Luyce is trying to provide Lusine H., a young girl from Gyumri, with a scholarship that would reduce her out of pocket costs towards her education. Lusine, her seven siblings and parents live together in an apartment. Her mother is a housewife and her father is a radio technician who supports their family on a very modest income. Lusine’s future goals are to attend culinary school in 2016 and become a great chef. Unfortunately, due to her family’s current financial situation she is unable to obtain the culinary tools needed to succeed in her classes. She is described as a leader, and someone who is meticulous and honest. Lusine is in need of financial assistance in order to reach her goals. The requested scholarship funds will help Lusine cover the costs of her tuition, uniform, utensils, books, stationary, some clothing and her transportation fee for one year.

The Need

Children living in orphanages and/or within poverty stricken families are often isolated and may lack the knowledge, adult support and financial ability necessary to make appropriate life choices. As a consequence, many of these children are deprived from the opportunity to pursue their education. The frustration of these deficits in addition to the expectation that they will not be able to afford additional education may even lead to a lack of motivation to seek the knowledge and support needed. By being given the opportunity to pursue educational goals, they will be able to secure job opportunities, a good future and a successful life.

Short Term Impact

Lusine H., who currently lives in Gyumri, will receive the financial support she needs, in a form of a scholarship, covering the costs of her college tuition, uniform, utensils, books, stationaries, some clothing and transportation for one year.

Long Term Impact

The long-term goal is that Lusine H., being given the opportunity to continue pursuing her educational goals at the university level, will have a reasonable chance to become self-sufficient member of Armenian society and have a successful life.

Sponsors Benefits

Sponsor will be recognized on both the Nor Luyce and Paros Foundation websites. Donors will be given regular progress reports on the girl’s progress during their university studies.
