Vahagnadzor Kindergarten Assistance

Vahagnadzor Kindergarten Assistance

Description

The villages of Vahagnadzor and Vahagni are approximately three miles away from one another in the Lori Region (north of the city of Vanadzor.) Neither village had an operating kindergarten for its children, until the mayor of Vahagnadzor and a team of dedicated staff and villagers reopened the village kindergarten. These villages are located along the north – south railway line. Immediately to the south of Vahagnadzor is a rail switching station. Several people from the village of Vahagni work at the station and pass through Vahagnadzor daily solving any potential transportation issues. It is estimated that approximately 10 of the potential students will come from the village of Vahagni if the school can continue operations.

A kindergarten building owned by the village of Vahagnadzor exists and is in good condition. Partial funding is needed to continue operating the kindergarten for a minimum of two years. The Kindergarten operates year-round. The annual budget of $10,000 includes one full time and four part time salaries, food and materials for the children and utilities for the building. The village budget supports the kindergarten’s operation and local villagers and other donors have pledged annually to support the kindergarten. Additional fees in support of this important project are collected as tuition fees from approximately 50% of the students that will be attending the kindergarten and whose families can afford to pay a modest monthly fee of approximately $8. It is also possible that once operational, additional funding for this kindergarten will be allocated from the Vahagni village budget. The amount needed to fund this kindergarten’s shortfall budget is $4,000 total ($2,000 for year one and $2,000 for year two).

All donors will be recognized in all press materials related to this kindergarten project and on the Paros Foundation Website. Visits to the kindergarten will be arranged for donors visiting Armenia.

NKA School Remodel Phase 2

NKA School Remodel – Phase 2

Description

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is a border village with a population of 1,380 residents in the Bert area of Armenia’s Tavush Region. This community, whose territory connects with Azerbaijan, lives and works under a constant risk of sniper fire and renewed armed conflict every day. Along with the economy these difficult and dangerous times have also had a negative impact on educational advancement and school attendance. The primary school in the village was in need of complete remodel in order to provide elementary and high school aged children the opportunity to learn in a clean, new and safe environment. This school, which has 180 children in attendance, is housed in three buildings of which currently two are in use.

The gym has been renovated through local sponsorship from the village. In 2015, the elementary school wing was completely remodeled with the generous contribution by Michael and Patricia Starzer (CO-USA) through our NKA School Remodel – Phase 1 project. The elementary school wing is made up of five classrooms on the first floor. In addition to the five classrooms, the hallways and the boys and girls bathrooms were remodeled as well as updates to the heating system, new lighting, new paint and new flooring. The wing that houses the middle and high school classrooms, and the cafeteria are all still in poor condition and in need of renovations.

Sponsorship of this project will facilitate the remodel of the second phase of this project including six classrooms on the second floor, the adjacent hallway, the staircase and two bathrooms, which make up the middle and high school. The scope of work will include repairs to the roof, new flooring and paint throughout, new classroom furniture, new electrical fixtures and two completely renovated restrooms. Phase three renovations (see Phase three project listing) will include renovating the school’s kitchen, the dining hall and the school’s entryway.

The Paros Foundation, with the help of generous donors Jean-Marie and Lori Atamian of New York, has already successfully renovated the Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur medical center and kindergarten, and provided five families with their own agribusiness for their economic development. These projects have had a huge impact on this community. It is of strategic importance to support these villages in their daily lives so that they may remain inhabitants of this village, mere footsteps from Azerbaijan.

Medical Center at Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur

Medical Center in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur

Description

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is a village with 1,380 residents in the Bert area of Armenia’s Tavush Region. This community lives on the border with Azerbaijan under the risk of sniper fire and renewed armed conflict. The medical center in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur also serves two neighboring villages of Tavush and Aygepar (also along the border.) The facility is housed in a building that was renovated last in 1999, which also houses the village administration.

The Medical Center consists of four rooms totaling approximately 1,188 square feet. The Center needs a new roof over its portion of the building, new windows and doors and a heating system. Currently they are using a wood-burning stove to heat patient rooms. They have a need for storage cabinets for both medication and patient records, chairs for the waiting room and a computer and desk for the physician’s use. Lab equipment such as an EKG machine, patient temperature device, and a Biochemical Analyzer and an ultrasound machine are also needed.

Any partial funds received for this project will be first used to replace the damaged roof. Then funds will be allocated to equipment purchases and the remainder of the renovation of the space. The Paros Foundation team will work with the village administration to ensure that they support the project in as many ways as possible including donated materials, free labor and/or support services.

It is anticipated that the repairs to the medical center will take approximately 3 months depending on weather conditions.

Medical Center at Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur

Thank you to all our donors, we have met our fundraising goal.

The Need
Quality medical care is difficult to provide in Armenia’s rural areas without proper facilities and equipment. Residents have no choice but to depend on these regional medical centers for their family’s health care needs. The roof, doors, windows and heating system are items that are fundamentally needed to allow this center to operate. The furniture and basic equipment needs that are requested will allow for health care professionals to better understand the ailments and treatment for their patients.
Short Term Impact
The renovation of the Medical Center will immediately better facilitate the health needs of the residents in these three villages. Materials will be purchased locally, thus providing a boost to the local economy. Three to four local workers will be hired during the renovation process and thus provide these residents short-term employment.
Long Term Impact
Citizens must have access to adequate, clean medical facilities especially for children. This renovation and equipment purchase will help meet the needs of approximately 3,300 rural patients annually.
Sponsors Benefits
All sponsors will be recognized with a plaque installed in the newly renovated areas. In addition, donors will be recognized on all relevant press regarding this project and on the Paros 100 website. Visits to the Clinic will be arranged for sponsors visiting Armenia.

Ghoghanj - Math & Science Dream Lab

Description

The mission of the Ghoghanj Children’s Center is to provide the proper support and guidance children need to excel in school and become self-confident and respectful young adults. Founded in 2003, the Ghoghanj Children’s Center works with vulnerable “at-risk” children and their families to help them overcome social, psychological and legal issues. The Center’s programs are specifically designed to facilitate group discussion and are sensitive to the psychological challenges of an at-risk child and their families. The Center works to develop successful communication, self-expression and tolerance skills among the students. A fundamental focus on the arts, homework assistance and tutoring to ensure academic success is a key ingredient of the programs’ success. In the last two year, the Ghoghanj Children’s center has successfully impacted and steered the lives of 13 children to higher education and new opportunities. To further the success of these children, the Center has identified a need for a programmatic shift emphasizing math and science. The creation of a Math & Science Lab at the Ghoghanj Children’s Center would provide 75 at-risk students access to Math, Biology, Chemistry and Physics instructors, lab equipment such as microscopes and workbooks, educational textbooks and Internet usage. The goal of this program is to broaden the educational experience of the students through interactive learning, projects and experiments.

Aknashen Speech School

Aknashen Speech School, Multipurpose Classrooms

Description

The Aknashen School for Children with Speech Disabilities provides speech therapy to approximately 20 children ages 3 to 7 each year. With proper speech therapy, these children often avoid a life of difficulties if they can correct their speech disability prior to beginning their primary education. The Aknashen School is housed in a building donated to the School by the Village Municipality. The School is currently comprised of two small classrooms. The addition of two additional rooms with proper lighting and heating will dramatically improve the space for these children to engage in their therapy. In addition, the expanded classroom and multi-room space will also allow the School to expand its activities and bring in additional children.

Local villagers have a history of contributing to the well-being and renovation of the School. These same locals will be engaged with this project and stand ready to donate their time and talents to the successful implementation of this project.

Group Home For Orphans with Disabilities

Group Home For Orphans with Disabilities

Description

Warm Hearth was started to provide an alternative to the psychiatric institutions. We are the first long-term group home in Armenia and the only one to serve orphans with disabilities or mental illnesses.

“Warm Hearth is not a project; it’s a home,” says founder, “that’s sustained by the faces of our residents and the harsh fate that awaited them if something was not done.” We serve Armenian orphans with disabilities who were destined for the psychiatric institutions. We believe they deserve basic human rights and this means a loving home and a life of dignity. Our group homes are long-term and address the challenge of having a disability and being orphaned in Armenia.

We operate a safe & loving group home for thirteen residents with disabilities, which reduces instances of human rights abuses in psychiatric institutions and increases our residents’ rights through integration. Our staff provides care that encourages residents toward independence, offers rehabilitation and is holistic.

The Warm Hearth center has an immediate need for funding to provide transportation to enable their residents to able to attend vocational training.  Classes will include tailoring, jewelry making and carpet weaving. The ability to attend these vocational courses will provide the residents with theraputic benefits and the chance to acquire new skills with the hope of employment.

Group Home For Orphans with Disabilities

Thank you to all our donors, we have met our fundraising goal.

The Need

Orphans with disabilities in Armenia are one of the most forgotten and vulnerable groups of people due to the stigmas associated with having a disability and the lack of resources and programs to care for them. Orphans who are over the age of 18 and have outgrown the orphanages are in even greater need due to the fact that there is no infrastructure in place to meet their needs. The only option available to these individuals is the former Soviet psychiatric institutions that do not focus on rehabilitation or holistic care.

Short Term Impact

The project provides a home-life for 13 residents, allowing them to live outside institutions. It’s a model for community-based care and a pilot project for moving away from institutionalization. In the short term, funds from this project will allow for residents to be transported into community settings.

Long Term Impact

The longer term impact of this project will be the expanded capacity at which Warm Hearth operates that will benefit future residents, allowing them to continue living in this family environment as their physical and/or developmental conditions change. This group home model will continue to serve as a example of non-institutional living for people with disabilities.

Sponsors Benefits

All sponsors will be listed both on the Warm Hearth and Paros Foundation websites. Visits to the Warm Hearth group home will be arranged for sponsors visiting Armenia.

Adopt a Restroom, Yerevan School #154

Description

Representatives of The Paros Foundation have visited more than 100 schools throughout Armenia. While some schools have either been renovated thanks to the Armenian government or as a result of the generosity of international donors, many remain in deplorable conditions and have little hope of being renovated in the near future. These conditions affect both the ability for students to learn, as well as the health of students and teachers.

The Paros Foundation will directly oversee the renovation six identical two stall bathrooms including addressing such elements as windows, doors, flooring, lighting, paint, sinks, faucet and toilet. Whenever possible, the school staff, students and their parents will be incorporated into the classroom remodel project to help build a sense of community and personal investment.
