Home Improvements for Anna Z.

Description

Anna Z. and her husband Andranik, a contract soldier, reside in Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur with their four sons, Vazgen, Vahan, Vigen, and Vahag, and Andranik’s mother, Siranush. Their home, originally provided by the Norwegian Refugee Council following the conflict of the 1990s, has suffered from persistent foundation issues over the past three decades and is now in urgent need of a full rehabilitation. A budget of $24,000 has been established to address the structural and foundation issues, restoring safe and stable living conditions for the entire family.

Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is an important border village with a population of approximately 1,100 residents in the Berd area of Armenia’s Tavush Region. This community remained under constant risk of sniper fire for much of the last 30 years. NKA was the single most damaged Armenian village during the Azeri conflict in the 1990s. Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur is a beneficiary village of the Paros Foundation’s Prosperity on the Border Initiative. With the major financial support of Jean-Marie Atamian and his family over the last 13 years, much of the village’s infrastructure has been completely rebuilt and improved, including its large secondary school, expanded kindergarten, medical center, emergency services building, and water distribution system. Having funded the rebuilding of NKA’s infrastructure, the Atamian family is now focusing its attention on the reconstruction of severely damaged houses to provide decent and safe homes for deserving families in the village.

The Need

Improving conditions for people living in communities along the border with Azerbaijan is essential. Many of these residents, like Andranik, serve as contract soldiers protecting Armenia’s borders. Helping villagers with critical home repairs is vital to sustaining a vibrant and resilient border community. Anna Z.’s family home has deteriorated significantly over thirty years, with serious structural foundation problems that now compromise the safety and wellbeing of all seven family members. A full rehabilitation is urgently needed to restore the home to a safe and livable condition.

Short Term Impact

In the short term, the family will benefit immediately from a structurally sound and stable home, greatly improving their safety and daily living conditions. Local contractors and construction teams will be hired to carry out the foundation repairs and renovation work, creating employment and directly supporting the local economy. Materials will be sourced regionally where possible, providing additional benefit to the surrounding community.

Long Term Impact

In the long term, homes in these communities will be improved beyond their previous condition. Making significant improvements to villagers’ homes strengthens their sense of security and belonging, improving morale and overall wellbeing, which is equally as important as the physical living conditions themselves. For Anna Z.’s family, a fully rehabilitated home will provide a safe and stable environment for generations to come.

All sponsors of this project will be recognized on The Paros Foundation’s website and in any press related to this initiative. For sponsors visiting Armenia, a visit to Nerkin Karmir Aghbyur and the opportunity to see the impact of their contribution firsthand can be arranged.
