HATSIK VILLAGE, Armenia— September first was an exciting day for elementary school children in the village of Hatsik in Armenia’s Armavir Region.  Thanks to the collective efforts of The Paros Foundation, its donors and staff, its SERVICE Armenia 2013 participants and more than 45 volunteers, 111 children began the school year in renovated facilities.

Through the generosity of hundreds of donors, five classrooms, the corridor and two restrooms were renovated through The Paros Foundation’s Adopt-a-Classroom and Renovate-a-Restroom projects, part of the 100 for 100 projects for prosperity.  The wing housing the elementary school received new doors and windows, two new bathrooms, laminate and tile flooring, chalkboards, window blinds, electrical upgrades and renovated desks.  The Paros Foundation underwrote all administrative expenses allowing 100% of donor contributions to go directly to this project.  The Hatsik village, which is home to more than 2,500 residents, values education and supported this effort contributing both financial and human resources.

The Hatsik Village School served as the work site for The Paros Foundation’s SERVICE Armenia 2013 program volunteers. Throughout the duration of construction, our team welcomed additional groups of volunteers, who assisted us in completing this project.  These committed individuals, working under the guidance of our construction team along with local professionals saw that the work was completed in time for opening day.   “Working in this village with the local villagers was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my summer in Armenia” Said Adrienne Asadoorian, one of the participants in The Paros Foundation’s SERVICE-Armenia 2013 program.  Program participants not only spent four weeks working in Armenia both helping to renovate the classrooms at the Hatsik School and distributing shoes to impoverished rural village children, but also collectively sponsored the renovation of one classroom.

In addressing the commitment of service and volunteerism of Armenians in the diaspora, Reverend Father Shnork Souin, Pastor of Saints Sahag Mesrob Armenian Church of Providence, Rhode Island said during the blessing of the newly renovated classrooms “His Holiness Karekin I once said, “I was not born in Armenia, but Armenia was born in me”.  The Saints Sahag and Mesrob Church Sunday School graduating class, their families and other parishioners both sponsored the completion of one classroom and volunteered during their visit to Armenia.

The Paros Foundation partnered with the Children of Armenia Fund (COAF) on this project.  The Children of Armenia Fund has committed to implementing a variety of community programs at the Hatsik School including addressing its heating system needs.

The Paros Foundation expresses its deepest appreciation to the classroom and restroom donors, its SERVICE Armenia 2013 participants and all the volunteers who worked tirelessly to realize this important project.   To sponsor a project of the Paros Foundation’s 100 for 100 Projects for Prosperity, please visit www.parosfoundation.org.
